where her bodies lies. We will then enter into The Ghetto,
the Jewish Quarter that still retains its unique atmosphere: we will be
talking about the way the Venetian Government supported the
Jewish Community in order to strengthen financially its commercial
power. We will then walk to Campo Dei Mori and from there reach
Tintoretto’s House and the Church of Madonna Dell’Orto, where the
body of the famous painter is buried together with his daughter.

where Marco Polo leaved.
This walk starts in St. Mark’s Square and will take us along the
bustling Riva Degli Schiavoni, then into narrow and hidden lanes,
the toponymy of which will make you understand the importance of
Castello, still considered one of the city’s most dynamic and vibrant
Districts. Landmarks of this tour are: the Orthodox Church of San
Giorgio dei Greci and its leaning Bell Tower; the Red Stone of Corte
Nova which, according to the legend, had the power to stop the
Plague of 1630 from spreading further into the city; the Church of
St. Francesco della Vigna with its charming Cloister and Via
Garibaldi, still nowadays one of the most densely populated areas
of Venice, buzzing with shops, wine bars and restaurants.
From Piazzale Roma we will walk to Carmini’s Church and the so
called “Fists Bridge” which, for centuries, has been the backstage of
fights between Venetians living in Castello and those living near
Campo San Barnaba. We will then reach the Squero di San Trovaso,
last example of superb craftmanship where Gondolas come to life
by being carved by hand. We will carry on along Zattere and its
superb view on the Island of Giudecca and from there we will go to
the Ospedale degli Incurabili, the Hospital of the Incurables, where
you will understand how cleverly Venice dealt with common
illnesses and epidemics.
Through hidden lanes we will then approach the Grand Canal and
see from outside two of its most famous Palaces: Ca’ Venier dai
Leoni which now hosts the Guggenhaim Museum and Ca’ Dario, still
known for being, according to the legend, cursed.
We will the admire the majestic Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
and end the tour in front of the Dogana da Mar, the Customs
Building, and its breathtaking view on St. Mark’s Square.
A walk full of charm through the district of Santa Croce and the
remains of its many Craft Corporations like “Laneri”, Wool Makers
and “Battioro”, Gold Beaters. We will reach the majestic Church of
St. Simeone Piccolo that stands opposite St. Lucia Railway Station.
The church resembles in shape the Roman Pantheon and its
undergrounds contain a frescoed crypt that can be visited by
candlelight adding to this experience a touch of mystery and magic.
